Introducing the Creator of MotoPhoto
I started riding motorcycles in 1969 and have never been without one or more ever since. In 1981 a non-riding incident left me with a spinal cord injury causing paralysis of my legs and the loss of my left eye. That ended my racing and solo street bike riding but not the desire to continue riding. While in rehabilitation the plan to build a sidecar was hatched. Soon after leaving rehabilitation I got started. The body of the sidecar was of my own design. I made the frame at a friend’s motorcycle shop so I could have access to a lathe and welder, and I hand laid the fiberglass over the wood form I made. The whole process was a learning experience because I had no experience working with fiberglass and very limited knowledge of lathe work and welding. Building it was great therapy because it kept me going with the goal of riding again being the reward.
Shortly after completing the sidecar and attaching it to a Kawasaki KZ650 I took off on a solo 7,182 mile trip to visit friends and family in the North. Since that time I have had a number of motorcycles with sidecars and currently own a Suzuki Hayabusa with a French made RDS Neptune sidecar and a BMW F650GS with Ural sidecar. The Hayabusa with RDS sidecar is a high performance rig with performance car wheels and tires on all three wheels, center hub front steering, sidecar wheel steering and an anti-sway bar between the rear suspension of the bike and suspension on the sidecar. As you can imagine this is not your typical sidecar outfit. Unlike a traditional sidecar this one can rip around corners and we have great fun in North Carolina dogging surprised solo sport bike riders. The BMW with Ural sidecar is used to explore all the dirt roads around Tallahassee.
